Out my window...

.... This morning a trio of F/A - 18 Superhornets on their way out to sea to conduct training exercises. The aircraft, screaming a couple of hundred feet overhead, from Naval Air Station Norfolk drown out the voices of the crows and blackbirds. You will see a lot of bumberstickers in my neighborhood claiming I Love Jet Noise. Sometimes it scares the pee out me, but that's hardly unusual in my neighborhood.  As the jets streak by at a  200 or 300 kts/hr to the northeast. they wont kick in the afterburners until their off the coast a bit.

By this time next year, the US Navy will have commenced biofuel tests on one of its F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets. A request for proposal for some 40,000 gallons of JP-5 aviation biofuel was just issued. No word on what feedstocks will be used in that fuel yet, other than the stipulation that no food crops are used:
