You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair. ~Douglas MacArthur
whether you like his style or not (i'm not a fan), his mastery cannot be denied. his voice and phrasing are superb. i wonder if harry connick, jr will reach the same heights.
I'll stay out of this one. Somh, After your post with Cab Calloway and the Nicolas Brothers I guessed(wrongly) you would be a Sinatra fan. It took me awhile to appreciate him and I actually like Dean Martin a bit better. But I love these old standards whether its Frank, Harry, Dean, Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Nat Cole or John Pizzarelli or most anyone else singing them. I will sing along with anyone.
Oh, guys, I've tried to think of something clever to say all day because it's obvious you're really enthusiastic about these artists you admire. Alas, I missed the boat. I don't like any of those people and I really don't like Frank Sinatra. But I DO like your appreciation of them all. Now, I can do Billie Holiday with glee, Sarah Vaughn, Edie Gorme, Frankie Laine, Harry Belafonte . . . so I'm not single-mindedly stuck on my own generation's music. Right now in my car there's an Edith Piaf CD in the player - in French. So I'm a bit well rounded. But I couldn't think of diddly to say. Rare.

ReplyDeleteSorry, standing, but Harry won't even reach Frank Jr's standards.

ReplyDeletekirk-i must sadly agree. he's got the pipes, but not the grit.
Nothing odd about Tony Bennett, he's great.
ReplyDeleteLet's not forget the ladies: Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, and, um...the nurse on Emergency...Julie London!
You are absolutely right an I will throw Rosemary Clooney, Doris Day and Andy Williams into the mix.
