Sure there was a sense of accomplishment climbing Mt Fuji, a memory I wouldn't give up but more often I've found going up hill to be a chore. A long trudge through the snow, to the top of the hill to ride my sled, toboggan or snowboard down. It was down hill that was the exciting part. A sense of barely controlled or uncontrolled havoc awaitng. In other words it was fun. Just letting go and letting gravity take over regardless of what happened along the way. In high school the city of Torrance used to ICE down a hill in one of the parks for skiing lessons. Afterwards my friends and I would ride our various surfboards, inner tubes and anthing else that would slide. Great fun 'til the ice melted.
Here in southeastern Virginia close to the ocean there are few hills, it's a flat landscape covered in trees and telephone poles. The highest point for miles around is an artificial hill with the name Mt Trashmore. That gives you a hint to its toxic beginnings. Regardless thousands of children each year trudge to the to top just for the pleasure of running down the side aided by gravity. Again that excitement of uncontrolled speed guides these children's actions. In other words fun. I have been pondering changing the name of this blog. I'm not going to do it. I love the uncontrolled mayhem that results when my brain gets ahead of my fingers. When I hit the CAPS LOCK instead of the A I was reaching for in my mad rush downhill to get my thoughts down. In other words its fun. I don't usually plan what goes into this writing. I just let go and see what comes out. Often I am forced to trudge back up hill to start the run over again. But what the hell, I've got time.

Another blue sky day in the OV after a few days of rain. It even looked and felt like snow last night though I new it was going to be a bit too warm. The day is cool and crisp like a ripe apple (I like the Honeycrisps and MacIntosh best) right from the refrigerator. Its going to be a good day. hope yours will be also.

i'm very appreciative of your blog name-glad you're keeping it. when i was running, running downhill was my best thing. i could let go, and let gravity! being on the edge of totally out of control, what a rush! uphill was a chore, only to be tolerated when doing hill work.
ReplyDeleteYou have nailed it, what a rush!
ReplyDeleteIn Salt Lake at the time I've been writing about, it would soon snow. I'd never seen it before. The first snowy Saturday, my dad took me to a local hill with the newly purchased sled. Remember, I was a quiet, reserved, sensitive and fearful child. So he talked to me a long time about how to manage the sled and what to watch out for. At the top of the hill, he asked, "Ready, Limes?" I was (sort of). He gave a slight push and I was off! It was my first clue in life that there was some hellcat in me. I became a risk-taking, show-offy, skilled sledding monster.
ReplyDeleteOf course you did. That's what quiet, reserved, sensitive and fearful children do on a downhill run (Well the good ones do). Isn't it great.
ReplyDeleteBeen slidin' downhill with glee for the ensuing 51 years!
ReplyDeleteHA! With glee. That's the way to do it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great explanation. I kinda figured as much, but it was great to hear you describe the glee.
ReplyDeleteLove your Lao Tze quote
Glad you liked it Kass.
ReplyDeletethis one's for you, tag:
ReplyDeletei went to valley of fire today, to take some photos. that was a bust, however...
i ran full tilt boogie down a hill, just for the sheer hell of it! damn that was fun.
A+ for using Full Tilt Boogie in a sentence. I need to investigate this valley of fire. Do you remember the scene from the Princess Bride where Wesley and Buttercup roll down the hill after she pushes him. That was one of my favorite sports. Wouldn't like to try it in a valley of fire.
ReplyDeleteMy friend, I do not enjoy apples, but I buy them for someone else who does like them, so I'm at least apple literate. I'd surely have thought you'd prefer the Fuji apples! Sorry, Limes in a giddy Sunday mood . . . . .
ReplyDeleteyes, i know that scene well. hey, maybe that could be a new olympic sport?
ReplyDeleteand no, valley of fire would not be the place to do it. rocks. big ones. i'll post pics, if any of them are in focus.
My eyes are out of focus. I thought your reply said pies, not pics. Of course your welcome to post pies if you like.
