Saturday Masters - Joni Mitchell

  1. Sometimes I feel like taking up smoking because of what it does to your voice. I love Joni Mitchell, in all her phases, but especially these later years. "A Case of You" is to die for. One of the reasons I learned to play guitar is so I could sing "Both Sides Now." I still have that original sheet music with my drawings of how to perform the guitar chords. Sigh.

  2. Why the sigh, Kass? After Mingus while I was over seas Joni dropped off my radar. I was thinking about clouds and Both Sides Now started playing in my head. As I told Leslie, Judy Collins was almost going to be today's Saturday Master. When I checked Youtube Joni came up. I had forgotten how much I admired her style. So there you are. i wish Youtube would have had some those years of her work that I'm missing.

  3. Tag - the sigh was an attempt to suppress some of my envy over her ability to sing and write songs. I can still sing and play the guitar, but when I pick up the guitar, I sound just like I did when I was 17.

  4. oh boy, joni. i think of her much in the same way i think of tom waits-more like poetry set to music, rather than lyrics. if that makes sense.

and kass, i'd give my right ovary (since i'm not using it anymore) to be able to sing or play the guitar, with ANY degree of ability!

  5. I understand. I have an old fender classical guitar sitting in the corner of my room, lonely and unplayed. I shattered my wrist years ago making it difficult to use my left hand in making chords. Though I wasn't very good before that accident.
@somh makes perfect sense to me. Joni and Tom are story tellers as is Dylan. I admire Joni's ability to play just about anything. Her guitar style is unorthodox with her various tunings.

I want to point out her interview with Tavis Smiley at the end of of couple of these clips where she talks about smoking since she was 9.
