Simple Pleasures

City of BaltimoreImage via Wikipedia Baltimore Inner Harbor

A rainy Friday here in the OV. Oldest, Shortest daughter Journey was supposed be here today but instead has been held back another week down in Florida. It's too bad. We had planned a 3 day trip. Journey and I like the National Zoo, Shari loves the Museum of Visionary Art in Baltimore, We all love the National Aquarium and the Smithsonian. Just being on the mall on warm spring day with Cherry Blossoms when all kinds of whackos are out and about protesting this and that is fun.

Most days I'm home alone with Sam. I will put in my obligatory job applications or mail our a resume or two. By now I just go through the motions without any real hope nor desire for success. We are getting used to getting by. Little things have taken on greater meaning. For example trying to save a bit on the electric bill we have stopped using the dryer and are hanging laundry outside. I like walking between the sheets and clothes and inhaling the fragrance as I did so long ago. Simple pleasures.

A few weeks ago I finally loaded Windows 7 onto my laptop and started using Google Chrome as my browser. There's definitely a difference between IE and Chrome.  I also started using StumbleUpon a random  internet search browser extension that takes you from place to place based on your interests and browsing history. Most of the images and video clips I've found lately have been via Stumbleupon. I spend way too much time stumbling. Here is a random stumble: The Simple Dollar. Sometimes I think the program reads my mind. Let's try another: I certainly wasn't thinking about breaking the last Taboo, but that's what comes up on this wet Friday here in the OV. Have a Good Weekend!

  1. Those birds put me in mind of the wonderful Leonard Cohen song as sung by Judy Collins. I think "like a drunk in a midnight choir" is a beautiful use of language.

I envy your proximity to the Smithsonian!

And, Tag, NOTHING is as wonderful to inhale as laundry hung out to dry. Downy and Snuggle can't come near it.

  2. So easy to get off track these days. I followed your link to sweet Judy (who was almost my Saturday master tomorrow) which led me in turn to Johnny Cash, Aaron Neville, to k.d. Lang and finally Leonard Cohen himself. It was a nice trip around the youtube.
The Smithsonian is special, I don't get up there often enough.
Nothing reminds me of being a child as the smell of freshly cleaned laundry hanging in the sun. Warm memories.

  3. You certainly hit on a number of my music giants there! We know about k.d. and me. . . . Judy. And I love Neville. The best article of sun-and-wind-dried laundry is a pillowcase. Oh, to put the head on that and breathe deeply.

  5. @somh. I'll wear my O's cap in your honor. What took you out west to Las Vegas? I never expected I would spend so much of my life on the east coast. I hate the humidity and the bugs, Love the history and the culture.
Les, you led me to those giants with Bird on a Wire. Each a very different song, each wonderful.

  7. Tag, not to be missed - and I don't think you missed them -all the takes on Cohen's Hallelujah. In fact, I remember that you commented a time or two on it. My favorite covers are k.d. lang and the young Norwegian male angels choir- I gather their version is fromthe Shrek soundtrack. I do not follow Shrek, but I do follow that song in most of its incarnations.

  8. I'm with Shari. That museum looks very stimulating. I love Stumbleupon. Almost wish you hadn't reminded me about it. I could get lost there and never come out. I'm on a mac and something must be wrong with one of my programs. I can't play vimeos. I've tried before and it just goes jerky. Maybe I need to update something.

  9. Les, The Shrek version was Rufus Wainwright, The Norwegian guys were awesome though I like Jeff Buckley's and k.d. lang's version best.
Kass I wish I had an answer for your vimeo troubles so I googled. Heres a link for a quicktime add-on that may sovle your problem
http://perian.org/ let me know if that works.
I think the Visual Arts Museum would be something very inspirational for you. Though you hardly need inspiration. I love what you do with what you have.
