Saturday Masters - Paul McCartney

This post is going to concentrate on Paul's work post Beatles. There was a lot recorded during those years and I didn't hear much of it for various reasons. I heard most of the chartmakers with Wings in their various incarnations but i've come to find out there was a great deal I missed and I'm sorry for that oversight now.

  1. OK, Mike, you've got a huge point about him. I admit to being a weirdo or worse. I detest him AND Yoko Ono, though those persons were the big influences on my hero (John Lennon). I mean - basically - McCartney was his artistic "other half". So I shall shut my mouth, open my ears and head, and try to appreciate him . . I'll try hard . . I don't . . oops . . I'll try . . mea culpa . .

  2. I put this post together last week and listened to them again last night. They are missing something and I think that something is an edginess, an edginess that John had. Paul just cannot get over the saccharine sweetness. Producers recognized this about Paul and perhaps Paul does as well because he teamed with Elvis Costello to write many of the songs on the LP Flowers in the Dirt in 89. I have a copy somewhere around the house but I haven't listened to it in forever, probably 89. Paul just wasn't the same without John and I'd prefer to believe that would have mended their friendship if they had been able.

  3. My uncles were greatly influenced by the Beatles and while I love those works I really freaked them out when I once told them I liked Paul's stuff with "Wings."

We were doing some boat riding that day on a river and they made a point of stopping and throwing me overboard. I appreciated the fact that they actually stopped first and came back for me...eventually.

Did I say they were really big Beatles fans.

  4. @Beach bum,That's just the age difference. With wings Paul was still writing some decent music but nothing really memorable. Helen Wheels, Listen to what the man said. Not bad, but not great and leading John to say "the only thing you done was Yesterday." A statement with a fair amount of truth to it.

  5. paul did a version of "it's so easy" on the "rave on buddy holly" cd. i've never heard him sound like that-very raw, total edge. at first i couldn't believe it was him. john and paul balanced each other. i also like to think they would have reconciled. but then, i'm a sucker for a happy ending.
